Cardiovascular diseases are responsible for nearly 17 million deaths globally each year, with more than half of these fatalities linked to acute myocardial infarction.

The National Health Commission of China reports that the nation sees over one million new cases of myocardial infarction annually. In an effort to boost public understanding of the risks and seriousness of acute myocardial infarction, November 20 has been established as China’s Myocardial Infarction Treatment Day since 2014, focusing on enhancing treatment capabilities.

As temperatures drop, the likelihood of acute cardiovascular issues rises. To safeguard heart health, experts suggest adopting lifestyle changes and healthier habits.

Wang Liansheng, the chief physician of the Cardiovascular Department at Jiangsu Provincial People's Hospital, has observed that modern lifestyles are increasingly impacting younger populations, with coronary heart disease on the rise among them. Key risk factors include unhealthy diets, disrupted sleep patterns, and a lack of physical activity.

"Long-time sitting can lead to reduced energy expenditure, affecting insulin sensitivity and thereby increasing the risk of diabetes and high cholesterol, both of which are linked to heart disease," noted Wang.

Moreover, excessive smartphone usage before bedtime can interfere with sleep quality and the body's natural rhythms. The blue light emitted by screens can also disrupt sleep and pose additional risks to heart health.

Wang highlighted the importance of adopting healthy lifestyle choices for the primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases. He advocates for a Mediterranean-style diet rich in fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy, poultry, fish, legumes, nuts, and whole grains, while minimizing sodium, sugar, sugary drinks, and red meat. He also recommends using olive oil and other non-tropical vegetable oils as primary cooking fats.

Regular physical activity is essential for maintaining heart health. Experts recommend aiming for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week, such as brisk walking or swimming.

Incorporating strength-training workouts can further bolster cardiovascular health. Wang emphasized the significance of taking short breaks to move around, even for individuals with sedentary jobs.

According to Wang Liansheng, leading an active lifestyle can aid in weight management, reduce blood pressure, and improve cholesterol levels. By implementing these straightforward adjustments, individuals can markedly decrease their chances of developing heart disease and other related health issues.
