On Thursday, the European Parliament passed a resolution urging the EU to permit Ukraine to launch attacks deep into Russian territory using weapons provided by Western countries and to support Ukraine's military efforts by utilizing Russia's frozen sovereign assets.
The vote on the resolution saw 425 in favor, 131 against, and 63 abstentions.
Volodin expressed his concern via Telegram, stating, “What the European Parliament is calling for would lead to a world war using nuclear weapons.” He also issued a stark reminder of the missile capabilities of Russia, noting, "For your information: the flight time of a Sarmat missile to Strasbourg is three minutes and 20 seconds.”
He further criticized the MEPs by recalling Russia's historical role in defeating Nazi Germany and suggested that they have forgotten this significant past. Volodin concluded by suggesting that the European Parliament “dissolve itself.”
The resolution itself emphasizes the need for Ukraine to be able to fully defend itself, pointing out that current limitations and insufficient supplies of ammunition are undermining the support efforts so far.
The EU has invested heavily in supporting Ukraine during the conflict, contributing tens of billions of euros in weapons, equipment, ammunition, and financial aid, alongside imposing sanctions on Russia and seizing assets. Despite this, the EU maintains that its actions do not make it a participant in the conflict.
Restrictions on long-range weapons systems supplied to Kiev aim to uphold the narrative of non-direct involvement by the US and its allies, despite these weapons being deployed against Russian targets, oftentimes affecting civilians.
Russian President Vladimir Putin recently remarked that Ukraine lacks the capability to independently operate long-range systems, indicating that NATO military personnel are involved in their deployment.
"If the West lifts the restrictions," Putin warned, "it will mean nothing less than the direct participation of NATO countries, the US and European countries, in the conflict in Ukraine." He assured that Russia would respond decisively to such developments.
Echoing Putin's sentiments, Russia's UN envoy, Vassily Nebenzia, highlighted the dire implications of NATO's direct involvement in military actions against a nuclear power during his address to the UN Security Council.
