European Nations Seek Participation in Ukraine Peace Discussions
The leaders of the US and Russia have reached an agreement to initiate negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine.

The Weimar+ group, comprising several European nations, is seeking to be included in these discussions. In a joint statement released on Wednesday by France, Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain, the UK, the European External Action Service, and the European Commission, the group emphasized that achieving lasting peace in Ukraine is a “necessary condition for a strong transatlantic security.”

This statement followed reports of a phone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump. After the call, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to announce that the two leaders had decided that their teams would begin negotiations to address the Ukraine conflict “immediately.”

The Weimar+ group stressed that “Ukraine and Europe must be part of any negotiations,” asserting that Kyiv should be provided with “strong security guarantees” as part of any agreement. They underscored their commitment to ensuring that the “shared objectives should be to put Ukraine in a position of strength.”

In the statement, they expressed, “We share the goal to keep supporting Ukraine until a just, comprehensive and lasting peace is reached. A peace that guarantees the interest of Ukraine and our own,” emphasizing that the “security of the European continent is our common responsibility.”

It remains uncertain when these negotiations will commence. Following the conversation between Trump and Putin, the Kremlin stated that Moscow is prepared to start the peace process but emphasized the need to address the root causes of the conflict. Russia opposes Ukraine’s aspirations to join NATO, viewing them as a contributing factor to the escalation of the conflict in early 2022. They insist that any resolution must ensure Ukraine’s neutrality, demilitarization, and denazification.

Trump also had a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky immediately after his call with Putin. He reported that Zelensky is keen to end the hostilities, stating that he, “like President Putin, wants to make PEACE.”

The US president mentioned that he and Zelensky have organized a meeting between the Ukrainian delegation, US Vice President J.D. Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for Friday in Munich, referring to it as the first step in the peace process. Zelensky later confirmed on Telegram that he had a “very substantive” call with Trump.

Speaking to reporters at the White House on Wednesday, Trump indicated his intention to meet with Putin in the “not so distant future,” suggesting Saudi Arabia as a possible location for the meeting. He also hinted that multiple meetings with Putin could occur in the coming months, affirming that both leaders agreed to “work together, very closely, including visiting each other’s nations.”
