According to a report by the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday, China has proposed a summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump to help resolve the conflict in Ukraine. This move aligns with China's long-standing goal of establishing itself as a potential peace broker in the ongoing tensions between Moscow and Kiev, presenting its own framework for conflict resolution.
This development follows a recent phone call between Putin and Trump, which was their first confirmed contact since Trump resumed his role in the White House last month. The US president described their discussion as "lengthy and highly productive," later announcing an agreement for an "immediate" start of negotiations aimed at addressing the Ukraine conflict.
In the past few weeks, Chinese officials have relayed a proposal to the Trump administration via intermediaries, advocating for a summit that would involve both leaders and offering to support peacekeeping initiatives in the event of a truce, as reported by the WSJ, with sources from Beijing and Washington providing insights.
The report indicated that the proposed US-Russian summit would take place without the involvement of Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, contradicting the West's established position of including Kiev in discussions related to the conflict.
The White House did not confirm whether it had received China's proposal but dismissed it, with one official labeling it as "not viable at all." Meanwhile, the Chinese Foreign Ministry refrained from commenting directly on the report but expressed satisfaction in seeing the strengthening of ties and dialogue between Russia and the US on various international matters.
During their recent conversation, Trump and Putin reportedly expressed interest in visiting each other's countries. The Kremlin's press service confirmed that Putin invited Trump to Moscow but did not specify when the visit might occur. Trump later suggested that their first meeting would "probably" happen soon in Saudi Arabia.
Since the early stages of the conflict in Ukraine, no peace talks have taken place. Negotiations held in Belarus and Türkiye collapsed in spring 2022, with both parties accusing one another of making unrealistic demands. In 2024, senior US State Department official Victoria Nuland mentioned that Washington and its allies had advised Kiev against accepting the terms proposed by Moscow.
