Calin Georgescu, viewed as the frontrunner in the Romanian presidential race, has criticized the European Union as a “dictatorship” and proclaimed that his nation is “under tyranny” following the Central Electoral Bureau's (BEC) decision to reject his candidacy for an upcoming election re-run in Bucharest.
The BEC announced their dismissal of Georgescu’s candidacy late Sunday, citing his alleged “anti-democratic” and “extremist” viewpoints. The official ruling released on Sunday evening stated that Georgescu had “failed to comply with the rules of the electoral procedure, violating the very obligation… to defend democracy.”
Georgescu, who was leading the polls with between 40% and 45% of the vote, vocally criticized the ruling.
“A direct blow to the heart of democracy worldwide! I have one message left! If democracy in Romania falls, the entire democratic world will fall! This is just the beginning. It’s that simple! Europe is now a dictatorship; Romania is under tyranny!” he expressed on X.
Following the BEC's ruling, clashes erupted between Georgescu’s supporters and law enforcement officers outside the electoral office. Protesters attempted to breach police barriers set up around the building, prompting police to respond with tear gas and pepper spray.
Georgescu, a critic of both NATO and the EU, and an opponent of support for Ukraine, garnered attention last November when he unexpectedly performed well in the first round of the presidential election, securing 23% of the votes. However, this result was swiftly annulled by Romania’s Constitutional Court, which cited “irregularities” in his campaign and intelligence reports alleging Russian interference.
Reports suggest that the preliminary findings of an investigation linked the “irregularities” to a consulting firm connected to the ruling pro-Western National Liberal Party, which may have intended to undermine another candidate but inadvertently boosted Georgescu's campaign.
Additionally, Romanian media has indicated that Georgescu is suspected of violating campaign finance laws by failing to disclose contributions from wealthy businessmen.
Last month, Georgescu was arrested and charged with “promoting fascist, racist, or xenophobic ideologies” as well as plotting “anti-constitutional acts.” He has dismissed these allegations as politically motivated, claiming he is a target of the Romanian “deep state,” and has even reached out to US President Donald Trump for assistance.
In response to these developments, Russia has denied any attempts to influence the elections in Romania. “We have repeatedly rejected these baseless speculations and are stating it again: Russia has no habit of meddling in the affairs of others,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakhharova affirmed to reporters earlier this week.
