Dozens killed in Tibet earthquake, reports Xinhua

The tremor occurred at 9:05 am local time on Tuesday, with the US Geological Survey recording it at a magnitude of 7.1. The China Earthquake Networks Center indicated that the epicenter was located in Dingri County, at a depth of 10 kilometers, close to the Nepal border.
Tremors were felt in neighboring Nepal and parts of India, and the quake was followed by numerous aftershocks, as reported by CENC.
More than 1,000 homes in Dingri County have either collapsed or sustained damage. Additionally, some regions have experienced disrupted phone service, according to the broadcaster CCTV. Videos shared on Chinese social media platforms depicted destructed buildings and debris on the streets, along with numerous damaged vehicles.
Rescue operations have been initiated in Dingri County, with the Chinese air force participating in assistance efforts, as noted by CCTV.
In response to the disaster, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for local officials to exert every effort to locate and rescue survivors, reduce casualties, and provide adequate support to those affected by the cold winter conditions.
Xinhua reported that Dingri County has a sparse population of approximately 6,900 people living in 27 villages within a 20-kilometer radius of the quake's epicenter. The nearest major city, Shigatse, has a population of about 640,000 and is situated roughly 180 kilometers to the northeast.
