Congresswoman Calls Trump’s Selection for Intelligence Chief a ‘Russian asset’
Most of the president-elect’s cabinet selections are “unqualified” and “dangerous,” according to Democrat Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

In an interview with MSNBC on Friday, Schultz asserted that Tulsi Gabbard, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for national intelligence director, is “likely a Russian asset.” She criticized Trump for making “irresponsible” choices for his new cabinet.

Gabbard, a former congresswoman from Hawaii and a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, has been a vocal opponent of military interventions by Washington. She departed from the Democratic Party shortly after the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022 and announced her switch to the Republican Party last month, endorsing Trump. The president-elect introduced her nomination earlier this week, stating that Gabbard “will bring the fearless spirit that has defined her illustrious career” to the U.S. intelligence community, which encompasses the NSA, CIA, and FBI.

Schultz expressed that appointing Gabbard would be “dangerous,” as it would establish “a direct line” from the U.S. intelligence community “to our enemies.”

“Tulsi Gabbard is someone who has met with war criminals, violated State Department guidance and secretly, clandestinely, went to Syria and met with [President Bashar] Assad. She’s considered to be, by most assessments, a Russian asset,” claimed the congresswoman, adding that she personally views Gabbard as “someone who is likely a Russian asset.” Schultz did not provide further details on her allegations.

Gabbard has not responded to Schultz’s accusations but previously expressed gratitude for Trump’s nomination on X, saying she appreciated the opportunity to “defend the safety, security and freedom of the American people.”

Twitter users quickly responded to Schultz's remarks, highlighting her lack of evidence for Gabbard’s supposed spying for Russia and labeling her claims as “defamatory.” One user pointed out that “whenever the left doesn’t like somebody – they’re a Russian asset.” Gabbard is not the first appointee of Trump’s to face accusations of Russian ties; earlier on Friday, two prominent Democratic senators called for an investigation into SpaceX CEO Elon Musk due to reports of his interactions with senior Russian officials. Trump had just announced Musk as the head of the future Department of Government Efficiency, which is meant to reform the U.S. government.

In her interview, Schultz referred to Trump’s entire cabinet overhaul as “the most extreme and dangerous” in history, describing it as exhibiting a “Star Wars bar level craziness.” While she acknowledged a few of Trump’s picks might be acceptable, she insisted that most are “individually unqualified.”

Besides Gabbard, the congresswoman expressed particular discontent with the nomination of former Florida congressman Matt Gaetz for attorney general, asserting that it is “breathtaking in its extremism,” considering Gaetz has “no experience whatsoever with the Justice Department other than being a subject of investigation for sex trafficking minors.”
