China responds to Trump's tariffs
China has unveiled new tariffs and trade restrictions in response to recent actions taken by the U.S. administration under President Donald Trump, who sees competition with China as a cornerstone of his foreign policy.

Just last week, Trump announced an additional 10% tariff on all imports from China, employing his emergency powers to address what he deems a national emergency linked to drug trafficking and illegal immigration. In the same directive, he also targeted Canada and Mexico, both of which have since provided concessions on border security to mitigate the escalating trade tensions.

The Chinese government swiftly retaliated just minutes after the U.S. tariffs took effect on Tuesday, implementing new restrictions on specific American imports, including a 15% tariff on coal and liquefied natural gas, along with a 10% tariff on crude oil, agricultural machinery, and certain vehicles.

In its announcement, the Chinese Finance Ministry criticized Trump’s move, asserting that it “seriously violates the rules of the World Trade Organization” and “undermines the normal economic and trade cooperation between China and the US.” Furthermore, the Commerce Ministry indicated that China has lodged a formal complaint against the U.S. tariffs with the WTO.

Beijing has also established a licensing system for the export of products containing tungsten, tellurium, bismuth, molybdenum, and indium. The Commerce Ministry stated this measure will “safeguard national security and interests,” although it did not explicitly reference the United States. These minerals are crucial for advanced manufacturing processes.
