China Maintains Position as the Largest Market for Industrial Robots Globally
At the 2024 World Robot Conference in Beijing, a vice minister from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced that China has retained its position as the largest market for industrial robots globally for the 11th consecutive year.
The vice minister, Xin Guobin, noted that in 2023, production of industrial robots in China reached 430,000 sets, and over the last three years, China represented more than half of the global market in terms of newly added robot installations.
Xin underscored China's role as a major influencer in the global robotics sector, owing to over a decade of fast-paced development. He also highlighted significant advancements in China's robotics industry, particularly in innovative fields like bionic perception and control technologies.
As of July 2024, China is home to over 190,000 valid patents related to robotics, which constitutes approximately two-thirds of the worldwide total.
Xin elaborated on the ongoing "Robot plus Application" strategy aimed at fostering robotics integration across diverse sectors. Over the last decade, robot density in China’s manufacturing workforce has increased dramatically, from 49 robots per 10,000 workers to 470.
The World Robot Conference in Beijing, which started on Wednesday, sees participation from 169 companies worldwide, including industry giants such as Tesla and Siasun. The event features displays of over 600 robot units, including 60 that are being introduced globally for the first time.
The humanoid robot segment is particularly poised for growth, with 2024 marked as a pivotal year for these robots to transition from experimental phases to practical applications. Experts, including those at Goldman Sachs, predict that the market for humanoid robots will grow to $154 billion by 2035.
China is leveraging its industry chain and policy frameworks to become increasingly prominent in the humanoid robot sector. After focusing on education and small scale models, China's humanoid robotic industry has expanded dramatically since 2023, growing 85.7 percent year over year to $549 million, according to a report from the CCID at MIIT.
Jiao Jichao, vice president of UBTECH, commented on China's position in the market, stating, "China boasts a large enough market and the world's best industrial supply chain, which is very conducive to the large-scale production of cost-effective products."
Presently, nearly 720,000 robot-related businesses operate within China, with over 20 of these companies producing complete humanoid robots.
According to AI specialist Zhong Xinlong from CCID Consulting, China now closely matches developed nations in securing a leading position within the humanoid robot market.
