The son of Senator Robert Kennedy and nephew of President John F. Kennedy initially aimed to challenge President Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination last April. After facing significant obstacles within the party, he shifted to a third-party attempt last October.
“Many months ago I promised the American people I would withdraw from the race if I became a spoiler,” Kennedy stated on Friday afternoon. “In my heart, I no longer believe I have a realistic path to electoral victory.”
Kennedy cited three primary issues that influenced his decision to leave the Democratic Party: “free speech, the war in Ukraine, and the war on our children.” He noted that Trump has “adopted these issues as his own to the point where he has asked to enlist me in his administration.”
He expressed disappointment with a party that his grandfathers helped establish, calling it “the party of war, censorship, corruption, big pharma, big tech, big money.”
Kennedy also accused the U.S. government—led by Democrats during both instances—of orchestrating a coup in Ukraine in 2014 and dismissing a peace plan in 2019, which he claims has led to over 600,000 Ukrainian casualties. “Ukraine is a victim of this war, and it’s a victim of the West,” he said.
Additionally, Kennedy criticized Vice President Kamala Harris for not securing “a single delegate” in the 2020 race, avoiding interviews, and lacking a substantive policy platform, instead focusing solely on opposing Trump.
According to NBC News, Democrats have launched lawsuits to prevent Kennedy from appearing on ballots in numerous states, leading his campaign to spend millions on ballot access issues.
Kennedy explained that he would remove his name from ballots in swing states while continuing his campaign in solidly “red” or “blue” states, allowing his supporters to vote without “harming or helping” anyone. His campaign has reportedly filed petitions in Arizona and Pennsylvania to this effect.
In response to his announcement, five of Kennedy’s siblings—Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Courtney, Kerry, Chris, and Rory—condemned him, accusing him of “a betrayal of the values that our father and our family hold most dear.” They expressed their support for the Democratic party ticket, stating, “We believe in Harris and Walz.”
