Biden describes Israeli 'campaign' as extremely successful
The outgoing US President Joe Biden has commended Israel's military actions in Gaza and the broader Middle East, labeling them as "extremely successful" and asserting that the region has "fundamentally transformed," with Iran reportedly becoming its "weakest in decades."

During a visit to South Carolina on his last full day in office, Biden welcomed the ceasefire reached between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip. He remarked, “After so much pain, death, and loss of life, today the guns in Gaza have gone silent,” praising the Israeli efforts against Hamas and Hezbollah as “extremely successful.”

He pointed out that Hamas had lost its top leadership, and their “sponsors in the Middle East have been badly weakened by Israel, backed by the US.” He also stated that Hezbollah's leadership had been “destroyed” and the group was “significantly weakened.”

Biden referenced the fall of Bashar Assad's government in Syria, which was overtaken by a surprise jihadist offensive late last year, suggesting that this situation has benefited both Israel and Washington. “The Assad regime next door in Syria is gone, removing Iran’s ready access to Lebanon. Iran is in its weakest position in decades,” he noted.

He expressed pride in Washington's ongoing support for Jerusalem and its military operations, contending that this backing prevented a more extensive conflict in the region. “I concluded that abandoning the course I was on would not have led us to the ceasefire we’re witnessing today. Instead, it would have risked the wider war in the region that many feared. Now the region has been fundamentally transformed,” he said.

Biden's statements came as the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas took effect on Sunday, following an agreement reached earlier that week to halt a conflict that had lasted for approximately 15 months and to exchange prisoners.

Tensions escalated between Israel and Hamas on October 7, 2023, when the militant group attacked southern Israel, resulting in around 1,100 fatalities and over 200 hostages taken. The subsequent Israeli military response led to widespread destruction and more than 46,000 deaths in the enclave, according to Gaza health officials. This flare-up also triggered a new conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon and included multiple exchanges of long-range attacks between Jerusalem and Tehran.
