At least 53 fatalities and 62 injuries have been confirmed following the powerful quake that struck China's Tibet Autonomous Region, according to the Xinhua news agency. The earthquake occurred at 9:05 AM local time on Tuesday, with the US Geological Survey measuring its magnitude at 7.1.
The China Earthquake Networks Center identified the epicenter as being situated at a depth of 10 km in Dingri County, Tibet, close to the Nepal border. Tremors were felt in neighboring Nepal and parts of India, with numerous aftershocks following the initial quake, according to CENC.
Xinhua reported that over 1,000 homes in Dingri County have either collapsed or sustained damage. There are reports of some areas losing phone connectivity, as noted by broadcaster CCTV.
Videos shared on Chinese social media depict devastated buildings and debris littering the streets, with many cars and motorcycles apparently damaged as seen in the clips.
Rescue operations have been mobilized in Dingri County, with participation from the Chinese air force, as detailed by CCTV.
In a response to the disaster, Chinese President Xi Jinping called on local officials to exert every effort to locate and rescue survivors, reduce casualties, and provide adequate shelter to affected residents during the harsh winter conditions.
Xinhua also noted that Dingri County has a sparse population of around 6,900, spread across 27 villages within a 20-km radius of the earthquake's epicenter.
The nearest major city, Shigatse, has a population of approximately 640,000 and is located roughly 180 km to the northeast.
