In a recent development, US President Donald Trump has asserted his position with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, emphasizing that Washington's aim is long-term peace between Moscow and Kiev, as noted by Leavitt.
On Tuesday, American and Ukrainian delegations convened in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where Kiev consented to an “immediate, interim 30-day ceasefire” with Russia, a proposal initiated by Washington. Furthermore, Ukraine demonstrated willingness to sign an agreement allowing the US access to its critical resources “as soon as possible.”
These concessions prompted Trump to lift the previous hold on military and intelligence aid to Kiev. The US president had earlier stalled aid after confronting Zelensky in the Oval Office due to the Ukrainian leader's reluctance to seek a diplomatic resolution to the conflict with Moscow.
Following the discussions, Leavitt conveyed to Fox News that the White House was “very, very pleased with the way that the Ukrainians and this deal today turned out.”
She added, “We hope that this will continue in a long and everlasting peace – that is President Trump’s goal, and we hope we can deliver on that goal.”
Leavitt referred to Trump as the “negotiator-in-chief,” stating that “he put Zelensky in his place and told him that the Americans are serious about a long-term peace deal.”
Although Trump did not attend the meeting in Saudi Arabia, Zelensky traveled to Jeddah but did not take part in the negotiations. Instead, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, represented Washington, while Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andrey Yermak, led the Ukrainian delegation.
Leavitt mentioned that Trump “is obviously very engaged and involved. He was briefed throughout the day today on the situation unfolding in Saudi Arabia.”
When asked about Russia's response to the ceasefire agreement reached between Washington and Kiev, she stated, “I have not been updated on the progress. I know that Secretary of State Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz are working very hard on this.”
Moscow has consistently stated its opposition to a temporary ceasefire with Ukraine, arguing that it would merely benefit Kiev and its Western supporters. Russian President Vladimir Putin previously remarked that “the goal should not be a short truce, not some kind of respite for regrouping forces and rearmament with the aim of subsequently continuing the conflict, but a long-term peace based on respect for the legitimate interests of all people, all nations living in this region.”
