Trump's comments came during his first Cabinet meeting of his second presidential term at the White House on Wednesday. The ongoing trade tensions between the United States and the EU have intensified since he revealed intentions to implement a variety of import duties to address what he labels a trade imbalance.
“Look, let’s be honest, the European Union was formed in order to screw the United States, that’s the purpose of it,” Trump stated during the meeting. “And they’ve done a good job of it. But now I’m president.”
He underscored his administration's plans to soon impose tariffs on EU imports.
“It will be 25%, generally speaking, and that will be on cars and all other things,” Trump commented, adding that the EU represents “a different case than Canada... they’ve really taken advantage of us in a different way.”
The trade dispute between the US and EU dates back to Trump’s first term when he enacted tariffs of 25% on European steel and 10% on aluminum, leading to reciprocal measures from the EU. Trump had also threatened tariffs on European cars, although that proposal did not materialize, resulting in both sides imposing tariffs on goods that totaled over $10 billion.
As part of his renewed approach to tariffs, Trump enacted 25% duties on all steel and aluminum imports from the EU effective March 4, compounding existing tariffs. He has instructed Howard Lutnick, his nominee for US trade representative and commerce secretary, to devise new country-specific levies by April 1 to help rebalance trade.
Since taking office on January 20, Trump has implemented a 25% tariff on all imports from Mexico and Canada, in addition to a 10% tariff on Chinese goods, citing concerns regarding illegal immigration and drug trafficking. However, after discussions with the leaders of Mexico and Canada, those tariffs were temporarily postponed for 30 days, contingent on commitments to enhance border security.
In response to the recent US tariffs, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed “deep regret” over the decision and asserted that the tariffs on steel and aluminum “will not go unanswered.”
When asked whether EU nations might respond to US tariffs in a similar fashion, Trump confidently replied: “They can’t, I mean they can try, but they can’t.”
