US sends troops to support Israel's defense
The Pentagon is set to deploy additional military resources in response to the increasing conflict between West Jerusalem and Tehran.

Washington has directed more destroyers, cruisers, and an additional fighter squadron to the Middle East to bolster Israel's defenses amidst growing tensions with Iran, announced the US Defense Department on Friday.

Additionally, the US has ordered the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group to replace the USS Theodore Roosevelt, which is currently stationed in the Middle East.

This move follows the killing of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran earlier this week. Both Hamas and Iran have accused Israel of orchestrating the attack and have vowed retribution. Iran also claimed that the US shares partial responsibility for the assault as a “supporter and accomplice” of Israel.

West Jerusalem has not confirmed nor denied involvement in the assassination but has consistently threatened to target Hamas leadership following the group's October 7 attack on Israel. The attack resulted in approximately 1,200 Israeli casualties and over 250 hostages being taken.

The ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict has further heightened tensions across the Middle East. In April, Iran and Israel engaged in direct conflict after an Israeli strike on an Iranian Embassy compound in Syria.

A Pentagon press release on Friday noted that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered changes in the US military's stance to aid in Israel's defense.

In addition to the carrier strike group, the new deployments will include "additional ballistic missile defense-capable cruisers and destroyers," and another fighter squadron. The Department is also taking measures to enhance the readiness for deploying additional land-based ballistic missile defenses.

Defense Secretary Austin informed his Israeli counterpart, Yoav Gallant, about the impending adjustments during a phone call on Friday morning. Spokeswoman Sabrina Singh remarked, “The secretary reiterated ironclad support for Israel’s security and informed the minister about additional measures to include ongoing and future defensive force posture changes that the department will take to support the defense of Israel.”

According to a report by Axios on Thursday, the Biden administration is “convinced” that Iran will launch an attack on Israel within days and is making preparations to counter it, citing three US officials.

President Joe Biden assured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of unwavering American support for West Jerusalem in a phone conversation, as stated in a White House press release on Thursday. The leaders discussed efforts to “support Israel’s defense against threats, including against ballistic missiles and drones, to include new defensive US military deployments.”
