Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has consented to debate his Democratic opponent Kamala Harris in a public forum, with moderation by Fox News. A prior debate between former President Trump and U.S. President Joe Biden resulted in a significant setback for the Democratic candidate, ultimately leading to Biden's withdrawal from the presidential race.
Trump confirmed his participation in the event via his Truth Social network on Friday, noting that the debate will be held on September 4 in Pennsylvania, although the exact location is yet to be determined.
“Rules will be similar to the rules of my debate with Sleepy Joe, who has been treated horribly by his party, but with a full arena audience,” the Republican wrote. Trump also mentioned that a previously planned second debate with Biden on ABC “has been terminated” due to Biden’s withdrawal and ongoing litigation against the network and its host George Stephanopoulos, which he claimed created “a conflict of interest.”
Harris has not yet officially agreed to the debate and its terms, but she stated last month that she was “ready” to debate Trump. Initially, Trump expressed reluctance to debate Harris because she was not the official nominee of her party. However, she secured the Democratic nomination two weeks after being endorsed by Biden.
The 81-year-old incumbent president ended his campaign on July 21, amid widespread concerns about his age and ability to serve, concerns heightened by his faltering debate performance against Trump and a series of gaffes. Several media reports indicated that his withdrawal was partly due to internal pressure from his party, with numerous significant Democratic donors withdrawing their support.
Additionally, an ABC/Ipsos poll in July indicated that Trump’s approval rating had increased to 40% following an unsuccessful assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. A bullet fired by Thomas Matthew Crooks—who was later killed by Trump’s security detail—narrowly missed the former president’s head, grazing his ear.
