According to Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, US President Donald Trump and billionaire ally Elon Musk are consolidating power in Washington “for corrupt purposes.” The Connecticut senator accused the president of penalizing his adversaries while rewarding his allies, labeling it as “the billionaire takeover of government.”
Since taking office on January 20, Trump has dismantled numerous executive orders signed by his predecessor, Joe Biden. In a wider initiative to reduce government spending, the president has suspended all US foreign aid and halted various projects tied to USAID, the main agency responsible for administering foreign political funding.
Additionally, Trump appointed Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla as well as the owner of X, as a “special government employee” to lead the newly established Department of Government Efficiency.
“This is the most serious constitutional crisis the country has faced, certainly, since Watergate,” Murphy remarked in an interview with ABC News aired on Sunday. He accused Trump of “attempting to seize control of power for corrupt purposes.”
Murphy argued that the president aims to address public financial issues alone, seeking to “reward his political friends” and “punish his political enemies.” He criticized the administration's recent actions, particularly the disbanding of USAID, as an “evisceration of democracy.”
Murphy further indicated that the agency was “a thorn in the side of the Chinese government,” stating that Trump’s decision to eliminate it will “make America much less safe around the world” while favoring Beijing. The senator also pointed fingers at Musk, who has referred to USAID as a “criminal organization,” for pursuing his personal interests by trying to shut down the agency.
“Elon Musk has many major business interests at stake inside Beijing, and so making Beijing happy is going to accrue to the financial benefit of Elon Musk and many billionaires who outsource work to China,” Murphy emphasized.
Last week, Trump claimed that USAID was channeling billions of taxpayer dollars into media entities to secure favorable coverage for Democrats. Simultaneously, Musk alleged that USAID was funding bioweapons research.
