US Reacts to Proposal for Nuclear Doctrine by Putin
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has condemned President Vladimir Putin’s remarks as “irresponsible.”

Putin recently indicated that Russia aims to modify its national nuclear doctrine, explaining that any aggression from a non-nuclear state, with backing from a nuclear power, may be viewed as a “joint attack” that could lead to a nuclear response. This development suggests that such provisions could apply in scenarios where Ukraine strikes deep within Russian territory using advanced weapons supplied by nations like the US, Britain, or France.

In an interview with MSNBC, Blinken stated, “It’s totally irresponsible,” accusing Putin of “rattling the nuclear saber.” He also noted that the timing of the Russian President's comments was unfortunate, coinciding with world leaders convening in New York for the UN General Assembly, and emphasized the need for the global community to tackle “the need for more disarmament, non-proliferation.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov clarified that Putin’s intention behind updating the nuclear doctrine is to caution Western nations against fostering increased military aggression from Ukraine towards Russia and its close ally, Belarus.

Peskov remarked, “This is a signal warning to these nations of the consequences of their participation in an attack on our country by various means, including non-nuclear ones,” asserting that he believes reasonable leaders and analysts recognize the seriousness of Putin’s announcement.

As of now, Putin has not provided specifics on when the adjustments to Russia’s nuclear doctrine will be implemented. Historically, he has adopted a cautious stance on nuclear weapons, having expressed in June his hope that a nuclear conflict between Moscow and the West would never occur.
