US House Speaker Calls for Zelensky to Dismiss Ukrainian Ambassador
House Speaker Mike Johnson has accused Ukraine's ambassador to the U.S., Oksana Markarova, of interfering in American politics and is calling for her dismissal. In a letter to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Johnson expressed his demand for Markarova's immediate removal, citing her involvement in organizing a politically sensitive event in Pennsylvania.

“I demand that you immediately fire Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States, Oksana Markarova,” Johnson wrote on Wednesday, pointing out that the event was led by a prominent surrogate for Vice President Kamala Harris and notably excluded Republican participants. “The facility was in a politically contested battleground state, was led by a top political surrogate for Kamala Harris, and failed to include a single Republican because — on purpose — no Republicans were invited,” he continued, describing the event as a “partisan campaign event designed to help Democrats and is clearly election interference.”

The Louisiana Republican claims his party's trust in Markarova has eroded, asserting that she "should be removed from her post immediately." He acknowledged a bipartisan support for Ukraine against Russia but indicated that remarks from Zelensky and his administration about Republican candidates strain their relationship. “These incidents cannot be repeated,” he urged, asking Zelensky to “take immediate action.”

Johnson's letter follows calls from several Republican lawmakers for a congressional investigation into Zelensky's visit, alleging that Democrats improperly utilized military assets, including the plane that transported the Ukrainian leader to Pennsylvania, to bolster Harris' presidential campaign.

In a recent interview with New Yorker magazine, Zelensky remarked on former President Donald Trump, stating he “doesn’t really know how to stop the war.” He criticized Ohio Republican Senator J.D. Vance as “too radical,” and dismissed Vance's ceasefire proposal as “an awful idea.”

Vance had previously proposed a plan that would establish a heavily fortified demilitarized zone along the current frontlines, require Ukraine to abandon its NATO aspirations, and promise reconstruction support from the European Union.

Zelensky has maintained that lasting peace can only be achieved if Ukraine regains full control over all its claimed territories, which includes Crimea and four other regions that have voted to join Russia. Moscow has deemed these territorial statuses non-negotiable and has characterized Zelensky’s proposals as unrealistic.
