According to UNIFIL, the Naqoura HQ and various peacekeeper positions along the 'Blue Line' have been “repeatedly hit” by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). “This morning, two peacekeepers were injured after an IDF Merkava tank fired its weapon toward an observation tower at UNIFIL’s headquarters in Naqoura,” the organization stated.
The tank directly struck the observation tower, causing UN personnel to fall. Fortunately, UNIFIL noted, “The injuries are, this time, not serious, but they remain in hospital.”
UNIFIL emphasized that “any deliberate attack on peacekeepers is a grave violation of international humanitarian law” and relevant UN Security Council Resolutions. Additionally, the organization reported that Israeli soldiers “deliberately fired” at and disabled the perimeter-monitoring cameras in Naqoura on Wednesday.
The IDF also damaged lighting and a relay station at a facility used for meetings among UN, Israeli, and Lebanese military representatives prior to the recent escalation in tensions between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi confirmed that the injured peacekeepers were from his country but noted that they had avoided serious injury.
The IDF acknowledged in a statement that its troops were operating in the Naqoura area “next to a UNIFIL base.” The Israeli military added, “Accordingly, the IDF instructed the UN forces in the area to remain in protected spaces, following which the forces opened fire in the area.”
Following the incident, Israel’s envoy to the UN, Danny Danon, suggested that UN peacekeepers “relocate 5km north to avoid danger as fighting intensifies” between the IDF and Hezbollah.
A spokesperson for the US National Security Council expressed deep concern over Israel’s ongoing attacks on UN peacekeepers. The spokesperson emphasized that it is “critical” that the IDF’s operations on the Blue Line “not threaten UN peacekeepers’ safety and security.”
Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stated that Israeli actions “could constitute war crimes.” He further revealed that Rome has sought an official explanation from Israel regarding the attacks on UN peacekeepers, asserting that “it was not a mistake.”
