The incident unfolded on Tuesday morning, involving a 45-year-old Ukrainian citizen who tried to drive through the embassy's entrance. Law enforcement responded promptly and detained the suspect.
While the embassy reported that there was no serious damage and no injuries resulted from the incident, it expressed criticism towards law enforcement for what it perceived as negligence in preventing such actions. “The perpetrator of the incident is well known to the Embassy and local police,” it stated.
The embassy pointed out that the suspect had previously attacked Russian diplomatic facilities in Sweden in 2015 and 2018. At that time, he “was deemed mentally unfit and was sent by Swedish authorities for appropriate treatment,” according to the statement.
The embassy further noted that the individual had resumed his sabotage activities. “However, no serious measures were taken by the police against this individual, which led to today’s incident,” it remarked.
Swedish police confirmed the occurrence of the incident, with local outlet Expressen reporting that an investigation is underway for attempted aggravated trespassing. However, officials did not disclose the nationality of the person involved.
In November, an unidentified drone was reported to have dropped paint on the Russian embassy, and Russian diplomats noted that the building had experienced at least ten vandalism incidents in 2024 alone.
Since the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine in February 2022, Russian diplomatic missions have faced frequent harassment and assaults, including vandalism such as egg-throwing and graffiti.
According to the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the host country is responsible for safeguarding diplomatic missions from intrusions and acts of violence.
