Recently, Ukraine utilized US-made ATACMS and British-supplied Storm Shadows to conduct long-range attacks on Russia's Bryansk and Kursk regions. In retaliation, Moscow launched its newly developed hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missile at a Ukrainian military facility in Dnepropetrovsk. Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that the conflict has escalated to a global scale in his address to the nation.
The developments have sparked considerable alarm among a group of British MPs and public figures, including former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who expressed their concerns in an open letter published in The Guardian on Tuesday. They emphasized, “This rapid escalation seriously threatens an all-out military confrontation with Russia and NATO.”
Furthermore, the group cautioned, “The risk of a nuclear attack cannot be ruled out,” urging outgoing US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to prioritize de-escalation and engage in peace talks with both Russia and Ukraine. They asserted that “the British government has to take responsibility for its actions and these terrible consequences,” emphasizing the urgency of securing an end to the devastating conflict. The letter stated, “Diplomacy and dialogue, not military escalation, are the only viable paths to a peaceful settlement in the region.”
In a related development, on Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov remarked that a political and diplomatic resolution to the Ukraine conflict appears to be “still a very long way off,” based on the current conditions on the battlefield.
Lavrov pointed out that recent “escalatory steps” taken by the US and its allies, including authorizing Ukraine's use of Western long-range missiles against Russian territory, indicate that the West remains “obsessed with the idea of inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia.” He reiterated President Putin's warnings that Moscow would respond decisively to such actions, stating that “all those responsible for causing damage to Russian citizens and infrastructure will receive the punishment they deserve.”
He concluded by underscoring that any potential diplomatic resolution between Russia and Ukraine must address the underlying issues of the conflict, including NATO’s ongoing expansion and the “systematic” violations of the rights of Russian speakers in Ukraine perpetrated by its government.
