This information raises questions about Gabbard’s suitability for the position in Trump’s upcoming administration. The announcement of her nomination in mid-November has sparked significant backlash among established officials, with many labeling the choice as a serious security concern.
Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz referred to Gabbard as “likely a Russian asset,” echoing claims made against the former Democratic Party member over the years. Hillary Clinton characterized Gabbard in 2019 as someone whom Moscow had “groomed” for the 2020 primary election, speculating that she would later run as an independent. Ultimately, Gabbard endorsed Joe Biden and exited the race.
ABC News noted that Gabbard’s foreign policy views “have been shaped not by some covert intelligence recruitment… but instead by her unorthodox media consumption habits.”
Anonymous aides shared with ABC News that Gabbard “regularly read and shared articles from the Russian news site RT,” seemingly indifferent to the 2017 designation that deemed it “the Kremlin’s principal international propaganda outlet.” The report highlighted uncertainty among former staffers regarding when, or if, she ceased her engagement with the site.
Gabbard, a member of the National Guard and currently in the Army Reserve, has openly criticized the ongoing U.S. military engagements, denoting them as ‘forever wars’ that do not align with American interests. Initially supportive of Joe Biden’s response to the Ukraine situation, her position shifted over time, which “has most galvanized her critics in the national security sphere,” according to ABC News.
In 2022, Gabbard left the Democratic Party and remained an independent for two years, before announcing her affiliation with the Republican Party in October during a rally for Trump’s presidential campaign.
