“I know I’m on the clock,” the retired US Army lieutenant general told Fox News on Wednesday. “I would like to set a goal on a personal level, on a professional level. I would say let’s set it at 100 days and move your way back.”
Kellogg emphasized Trump’s determination to restart negotiations between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, aiming to find a settlement to a conflict that has resulted in “enormous” casualties on both sides.
“He’s not trying to give something to Putin or to the Russians. He’s actually trying to save Ukraine and save their sovereignty. And he’s going to make sure that it’s equitable and that it’s fair,” Kellogg stated.
He criticized President Joe Biden, arguing that “the biggest mistake President [Joe] Biden made is the fact that he’s never engaged in any conversations with Putin.”
“He hasn’t talked to him in over two years,” Kellogg continued, pointing out that Trump “does talk to adversaries and allies alike.”
While Trump has consistently promised to swiftly broker a peace deal, he has provided few details about his plans. Reports suggest that his team is contemplating freezing the conflict along its current front line.
Negotiations between Moscow and Kiev collapsed in the spring of 2022, with both parties accusing each other of making unrealistic demands. Putin has indicated that for any settlement to be viable, Ukraine must abandon its intentions to join NATO and renounce claims to Crimea and four other territories that have been integrated into Russia.
