In a phone conversation with Ukraine's leader Vladimir Zelensky last month, Trump reiterated his commitment to quickly resolve the ongoing conflict between Kiev and Moscow if he wins the upcoming election. Additionally, in June, Trump expressed his intention to halt the substantial aid the U.S. has been sending to Ukraine.
During a campaign event in Asheboro, North Carolina, with his running mate, Senator J.D. Vance, Trump expressed his concerns about a report that highlighted several weaknesses in the U.S. military, commenting, "They released a report talking about all of the vulnerable areas… we’re weak here, we’re weak there.”
“That’s like saying: ‘We have no ammunition,’” he added. “You know why. We gave it all up to Ukraine and various other places. We gave them everything.”
Trump emphasized that the U.S. has provided billions of dollars in weaponry and ammunition to other nations without compensation.
While Trump did not specify the report he mentioned, a recent 312-page analysis by experts from the congressional Commission on the National Defense Strategy released in late July pointed out significant shortcomings in the U.S. military. The report warned that the U.S. military does not possess the necessary capabilities or capacity to confidently deter or win a conflict, particularly against China.
The analysis further suggested that in a potential conflict with China, U.S. military munitions could be depleted in just three to four weeks, with critical munitions such as anti-ship missiles running out in only a few days. The commission cited serious deficiencies in the American defense industrial base that need substantial investment to correct.
