US President-elect Donald Trump recently shared a video that allegedly depicts residents of Greenland supporting his plan to buy the world’s largest island. However, local media outlets have raised questions about the legitimacy of the demonstration.
The two-minute video, posted by Trump on his Truth Social account, features a crowd of individuals wearing the recognizable red ‘MAGA’ caps who express a desire for Greenland to join the US.
On Monday, the president-elect asserted that “the people of Greenland are ‘MAGA,’” while sharing another video from a supporter donning the caps in relation to his attempt to purchase the island.
Subsequently, Danish state broadcaster DR News reported that the ‘MAGA’ group featured in the video shared by Trump’s son was not comprised of genuine Trump supporters but rather individuals who are homeless and socially marginalized. According to the report, these individuals were allegedly offered a free meal in return for participating in the publicity stunt, with sources in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, providing this information.
The original 'MAGA' figure highlighted by the president-elect in his social media post on Monday was identified by local media as a convicted marijuana trafficker. Reports indicated that Timmy Zeeb had received a four-year prison sentence for his involvement in one of the largest cannabis busts in Greenland's history.
The Danish government has categorically dismissed Trump’s bid to acquire Greenland. In fact, Denmark’s King Frederik, the ceremonial head of state of the democratic monarchy, even altered the national coat of arms to emphasize Copenhagen's claim to the island.
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev weighed in on Thursday, asserting that Trump’s numerous territorial assertions and the provocative actions of his associates are mere distractions. He described it as an “agenda of cosmic scale and… cosmic stupidity,” referencing a well-known Russian literary quote. Medvedev suggested that the ultimate aim of these claims is to keep outgoing President Joe Biden overshadowed.
Trump justified his interest in acquiring Greenland by highlighting the island’s strategic military location and its potential wealth of natural resources in the Arctic.
