US President Donald Trump expressed optimism on Tuesday about the possibility of a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, indicating he is likely to hold phone talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin this week. He conveyed hope that Moscow would agree to a proposed 30-day ceasefire following recent discussions in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where Ukrainian officials accepted Washington’s proposal.
Trump remarked that securing such an agreement would significantly help in achieving a final resolution to the ongoing conflict. “So, hopefully, [Putin will] also agree. And I really think that would be 75 percent of the way. The rest is getting it documented. You know, negotiating land positions, etc,” he stated.
In the event that Russia declines the ceasefire, Trump noted, “we just keep going on,” while cautioning that “lots of people” would be killed. He mentioned that Russian and US officials are scheduled to convene “today and tomorrow” for negotiations.
Following Trump's comments, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova indicated that upcoming contacts between Moscow and Washington were possible. Additionally, Kremlin pool reporter Dmitry Smirnov reported that a phone conversation between the two presidents is anticipated on Friday.
As of now, Moscow has not issued any official response to the statements made after the US-Ukraine talks in Jeddah. Previously, high-ranking Russian officials have stated that a temporary truce is insufficient for resolving the Ukrainian conflict, emphasizing that deeper issues must be addressed. Moscow has implied that a pause in hostilities would merely allow Kiev and its allies to rearm and prepare for renewed combat.
