"Trump Derangement Syndrome" Might Be Classified as a Mental Illness
Republican lawmakers in Minnesota have put forward a bill aimed at modifying state law to recognize 'Trump Derangement Syndrome' as a psychiatric disorder. This legislative proposal characterizes TDS as a condition where people respond irrationally to the policies and presidency of former President Donald Trump.

The phrase 'Trump Derangement Syndrome' has been commonly adopted by Trump supporters and conservative commentators to label intense adverse reactions toward the Republican leader.

The bill was brought forward on Monday by five GOP legislators, who are advocating for the inclusion of TDS in the state's official mental disorder classification. According to the proposal, TDS is defined as “the acute onset of paranoia in otherwise normal persons that is in reaction to the policies and presidencies of President Donald J. Trump.”

The proposed legislation claims that TDS can lead to behaviors like “verbal hostility or acts of aggression against those with differing political opinions.” It further posits that those affected by TDS find it challenging to distinguish between political disagreements and psychological issues.

Senator Glenn Gruenhagen, one of the bill's sponsors, defended the initiative, arguing that the “irrational behaviour” displayed by some of Trump’s critics underscores a “deeper psychological problem.” He asserted that the intent of the bill is to tackle this concern, “not mere political disagreements.”

In a Facebook post, the senator remarked, “We should be able to have civil debates without demonstrating violent and unreasonable reactions such as burning down Tesla dealerships, threatening people who wear Trump hats or committing road rage at the sight of a Trump bumper sticker on a person’s car.”

Gruenhagen has also admitted that the bill is unlikely to gain traction in the Minnesota Senate, where Democrats hold a slim majority. He acknowledged, “Of course, we all know that the Democrats and Governor Walz will never allow this bill to pass anyway, so take a deep breath and calm down,” referencing the backlash provoked by the bill in the Minnesota Capitol.

Critics of the term TDS contend that it serves as a rhetorical maneuver to undermine legitimate critiques of Trump’s actions and policies. Additionally, some have noted that the label could just as easily apply to Trump supporters who react aggressively to dissent against him.
