US President Donald Trump has compared Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky’s ability to obtain hundreds of billions of dollars from the previous administration to “taking candy from a baby.”
The Republican has consistently criticized his predecessor for being overly generous toward Kiev, highlighting that Washington has not received anything in return.
In an interview with Fox News on Sunday, Trump remarked that Zelensky “took money out of this country under [US President Joe] Biden like candy from a baby. It was so easy.”
Trump repeated his assertion that “we gave him, in my opinion, $350 billion,” further noting that the Ukrainian leader has not shown appropriate gratitude. He emphasized that had he been president in 2022, the situation in Ukraine would not have escalated into open hostilities.
In a statement to reporters on Friday, Trump cautioned that “if [the Ukrainians] don’t want to settle, we’re out of there.” He clarified that any additional US support would depend on Kiev’s willingness to pursue peace with Moscow.
On Wednesday, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt indicated that the “National Security Council told me… they paused or they are reconsidering the funding for Ukraine.” She added, “It’s a pause for a review.”
In late February, Trump and Zelensky had a contentious exchange at the White House in front of the media. What was intended as a prelude to signing an agreement for the US to access Ukraine’s minerals, including rare earths, turned into an accusation from the US president that his visitor was “gambling with World War III” due to Zelensky’s refusal to negotiate with Russia.
Following the incident, the US suspended military assistance to Ukraine, with CIA Director John Ratcliffe confirming on Wednesday that intelligence sharing with Kiev had also been halted.
