Trump announces choice for special envoy to Ukraine
**Ex-general Keith Kellogg reportedly co-authored the “frozen conflict” peace proposal**

US President-elect Donald Trump has appointed retired Army general Keith Kellogg as his special envoy for Ukraine and Russia. Trump is set to be inaugurated as the 47th US president on January 20 next year and has already revealed a number of future officials, some of whom will require Senate approval.

“He was with me right from the beginning,” Trump stated on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday, announcing Kellogg’s nomination. “Together, we will secure peace through strength and make America, and the world, safe again!”

Kellogg previously served as chief of staff for the National Security Council during Trump's first term and was a senior aide to then-Vice President Mike Pence. Following the departure of General Michael Flynn in February 2017, he also held the position of acting national security advisor to Trump.

In a recent interview with Fox News, Kellogg commented, “I don’t think World War III has begun, but we’re right on the precipice,” following President Joe Biden's decision to authorize long-range missile strikes into Russia. He characterized the conflict as “the largest land war in Europe since the end of WWII,” warning that a single spark “can spin things right out of control, without even trying.”

While Kellogg refrained from criticizing the White House for the missile authorization, he suggested it would provide Trump “more leverage” in negotiations once he takes office.

Richard Grenell, the former US ambassador to Germany and Trump’s ex-acting director of national intelligence, was also considered for the role.

According to Reuters, Kellogg and another former Trump aide, Fred Fleitz, collaborated on a proposal aimed at resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which Vice President-elect JD Vance discussed in a September interview. The plan proposes to freeze the conflict along the current front lines without acknowledging Russia’s claims over Ukrainian territory, delaying discussions about Ukraine's potential NATO membership. Additionally, the proposal includes a strategy to pressure Moscow into negotiations by threatening to increase US support for Kiev, while offering Ukraine further American weaponry in exchange for its willingness to enter talks. However, both Russia and Ukraine have dismissed this proposal as unrealistic.

Kellogg's military background includes serving in the US Army, where he was chief of staff for the 82nd Airborne Division during the first Gulf War. Following the 2003 invasion of Iraq, he took on the role of chief operating officer for the occupation authority in Baghdad.
