Trump has often suggested that his administration could integrate Canada into the US. “You get rid of that artificially drawn line, and you take a look at what that looks like, and it would also be much better for national security,” he mentioned during a press conference at his Florida residence.
Addressing Trump’s remarks, Trudeau, who recently announced his decision to step down as prime minister and leader of the ruling Liberal Party, responded on Tuesday.
“There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States,” Trudeau asserted on X.
He also emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating that “workers and communities in both our countries benefit from being each other’s biggest trading and security partner.”
Pierre Poilievre, leader of the opposition Conservative Party, echoed Trudeau’s sentiments with a firm response to Trump’s comments. “Canada will never be the 51st state. Period. We are a great and independent country,” Poilievre wrote on X.
He highlighted that Canada has been “the best friend to the US,” noting mutual trade, investments, and Canada’s role in assisting the US after the 9/11 attacks.
“Our weak and pathetic NDP-Liberal government has failed to make these obvious points,” Poilievre added. He pledged that, if he were to become prime minister, he would “rebuild our military and take back control of the border to secure both Canada and the US,” and also “take back control of our Arctic to keep Russia and China out.”
Trudeau, who has been in office since 2015, has faced a significant decline in his approval ratings in recent months. In a speech on Monday, he expressed his lack of confidence in leading the Liberals in the upcoming election.
In response to Trudeau’s announcement, Trump claimed on his Truth Social platform that “many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State.” He added, “The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned.”
Throughout his election campaign, Trump had threatened to impose tariffs on Canadian goods, suggesting that such actions would bolster the US economy.
