Delegates have convened in Chicago to formally nominate US Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential candidate for the upcoming election.
Pro-Palestine protesters have dismantled a section of the metal security fence outside the Democratic National Convention (DNC), where US President Joe Biden is set to speak on Monday evening.
Prominent Democrats are in Illinois for a four-day event culminating in the official nomination of Vice President Harris as the party’s candidate for the 2024 presidential election.
Protesters marched towards the Union Center in Chicago, calling on Biden to cut military aid to Israel and to exert pressure on the Israeli government to cease hostilities against Hamas in Gaza. They breached the northern section of the Union Center's fence, confronting police officers who were attempting to block their advance.
Footage from the scene captures activists forcing down a portion of the fence and engaging with officers trying to intervene. Several individuals have been taken into custody.

Pro-Palestinian activists have been organizing demonstrations nationwide since the onset of the conflict in Gaza in October 2023, frequently interrupting American politicians and attempting to disrupt public gatherings.

Last month, Biden suspended his presidential campaign, following mounting pressure from other Democrats and party donors who expressed concerns over his declining health potentially hindering his chances against Republican candidate Donald Trump in November. Subsequently, Biden has endorsed Harris as his chosen successor.
