Undefeated Russian fighter Artur Beterbiev successfully defended his WBO, WBC, and IBF world light-heavyweight titles with a stoppage victory over home favorite Anthony Yarde in an intense matchup at Wembley Arena on Saturday night.
Beterbiev, 38, secured the win in the eighth round with a powerful right-hand punch that sent Yarde to the canvas. Although the British fighter managed to beat the count, Beterbiev quickly intensified the pressure, leading Yarde’s corner to halt the fight and protect their fighter from further damage.
Yarde, 31, proved to be a more formidable opponent than many had anticipated. Competing in front of an enthusiastic home crowd, the London fighter found notable success in a thrilling fifth round before Beterbiev leaned on his extensive experience to regain control of the contest.
Beterbiev, who also holds citizenship in Canada and trains in Montreal, expressed satisfaction with his performance against Yarde, despite the bout being closer than expected.
“I can’t say I did a bad fight, but if I do again, I want to do better. But I feel good,” Beterbiev remarked to BT Sport. “Anthony did [punch hard]. He’s young. He has time I think, and I hope he will do well in the future."
“If I’m being honest, every punch he did, for all those punches we prepared, that’s why I came back and back, because we knew, we expected those punches,” the Dagestani-born fighter added.
Beterbiev handed Yarde his third defeat in 26 professional matches.
The eighth-round stoppage maintained Beterbiev’s astonishing 100% knockout rate against every one of his 19 opponents in professional boxing. This victory has further fueled the demand for an all-Russian undisputed light-heavyweight title clash with WBA champion Dmitry Bivol.
Bivol, 32, holds an undefeated record of 21-0 and is known for delivering a rare loss to Mexican superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez during their title fight in Las Vegas in May of the previous year. He followed that impressive win with a commanding decision victory over Mexico's Gilberto Ramirez in Abu Dhabi in November.
