Bloomberg revealed on Friday that over a dozen individuals associated with Thiel have been appointed to positions within the Trump administration. This group consists of “current and former employees of his companies, as well as people who have helped manage his fortune or benefitted from his investments and charitable giving.”
The report identifies 15 individuals in the government with ties to Thiel, including five who work in the Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency.
Among these officials are Vice President J.D. Vance and AI and crypto czar David Sacks. Bloomberg noted that Vance previously worked at Thiel’s Mithril Capital and that Thiel played the role of “mentor” and sponsor to Vance. Additionally, he is said to have assisted Vance in making connections with Trump following Vance’s public criticism of the president in 2021. Sacks, who has long-standing ties with Thiel, is also a co-founder of PayPal.
At 57, Thiel does not hold an official position within the administration.
Quinn Slobodian, a professor of international history at Boston University, was quoted by Bloomberg describing the influence of major tech figures on the U.S. government as “unprecedented in the modern era.” Slobodian expressed that these individuals are more focused on initiating a “bottom-up renovation of how the government operates” rather than solely profiting from government contracts.
The article also highlighted Musk’s long-standing connections to Thiel, noting that he has been a prominent advocate against government inefficiency in the Trump administration.
In related news, the New York Times reported that tensions between Musk and other Trump administration members have surfaced recently. The newspaper stated that Musk clashed with Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a recent "extraordinary" cabinet meeting. Musk allegedly accused Rubio of not adequately enforcing staff reductions, prompting President Trump to intervene in the dispute.
However, Trump denied the confrontation, asserting that “Elon gets along great with Marco and they’re both doing a fantastic job.”
