Former US President Joe Biden has expressed his willingness to fundraise, campaign, and contribute in any necessary way to help Democrats recover the ground lost to Republicans during his administration, according to a report by NBC News on Friday, which cited individuals familiar with the situation.
Biden’s offer was made during private discussions with party leaders, including a meeting last month with newly appointed Democratic National Committee chairman Ken Martin. The former president conveyed his readiness to support the party in light of its dwindling popularity, as noted by sources involved in the conversations.
Recent polling by NBC indicates that Democratic favorability among registered voters stands at 27%, marking the lowest level since polling began in 1990.
Responses to Biden’s proposal have been mixed, with some activists and donors highlighting his age, 82, and his ties to the 2024 election loss as potential drawbacks. Many Democrats express frustration over Biden's decision to run for re-election and his late-entry into the race, limiting the timeframe for former Vice President Kamala Harris to prepare for a campaign against Donald Trump, which she ultimately lost.
“Who’s going to want Joe Biden back in the game?” a prominent Biden supporter remarked anonymously to the media outlet.
Nevertheless, not all members of the Democratic Party have dismissed Biden’s potential involvement. DNC Vice Chair Jane Kleeb stated that Biden is still a beloved figure among voters and would be welcomed as a speaker at party events.
Despite the varying opinions, Biden and former first lady Jill Biden have signaled their readiness to campaign and fundraise as they transition back to private life in Delaware, according to sources cited by the media. The former president is reportedly continuing to commute to Washington and meet with former aides.
Since taking office in January, US President Donald Trump has referenced Biden and his administration over 400 times, as reported by NBC. Trump has criticized his predecessor on various issues, including immigration, inflation, and the validity of documents signed using an autopen.
As of now, Biden has not publicly addressed Trump’s criticisms. His aides told NBC that he has no regrets and remains defiant, convinced that his party mismanaged the 2024 election.
