On Monday, Israel conducted airstrikes on Beirut and southern Lebanon, claiming its operations aimed at a senior commander of Hezbollah along with the group’s weapon depots and rocket sites. In retaliation, Hezbollah launched missiles towards northern Israel.
“The Spanish government expresses its deep dismay and condemnation of the Israeli bombardment of southern and eastern Lebanon today, which has left hundreds dead, in response to Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel over the weekend,” the Foreign Ministry in Madrid stated on Monday evening.
“The spiral of violence must stop,” the ministry reiterated.
Spain urged all involved parties to “respect civilian lives and the basic principles of international humanitarian law” while calling for full adherence to UN Security Council Resolution 1701, based on the unofficial translation from the ministry.
“War must be avoided at all costs,” highlighted the Spanish Foreign Ministry. “An immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza is absolutely necessary to reduce regional tension.”
Recent tensions between Israel and Hezbollah intensified last week when a series of explosions affected thousands of communication devices used by the Lebanese group, killing at least 37 individuals and injuring around 3,000, including children. Israeli airstrikes on Friday resulted in the death of Ibrahim Aqil, a senior Hezbollah figure.
Hezbollah retaliated with a barrage of missiles targeting northern Israel on both Sunday and Monday afternoons, coinciding with further Israeli airstrikes on Beirut and the Bekaa Valley. Subsequent reports from the Lebanese Health Ministry indicated over 350 deaths and more than 1,200 injuries due to Israeli attacks on Monday, which included 42 women and 24 children among the casualties.
The Israel Defense Forces reported they had hit “more than 1,300” targets associated with Hezbollah, with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant characterizing these actions as “crushing what was built by Hezbollah for 20 years.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged Lebanese civilians to “get out of harm’s way” and not allow Hezbollah to use them as “human shields.”
“Once our operation is finished, you can come back safely to your homes,” Netanyahu stated in a video message in English.
Since October, Israel and Hezbollah had been engaged in low-intensity exchanges of missile fire and airstrikes, with the IDF primarily focused on “eradicating” Hamas in Gaza. The attacks by the Palestinian group on October 7 are reported to have resulted in approximately 1,200 Israeli casualties, while over 41,000 Palestinians in the enclave have died as a consequence of Israeli military actions since that time.
