Elon Musk has cautioned that Europe must eliminate its “pervasive pessimism” to avoid facing its civilizational end. He suggested that many Europeans lack optimism about the future and often perceive the continent as “bad” in some manner. He expressed on his social media platform X, “Pervasive pessimism. This will lead to the end of Europe. Therefore, it must change.”
This statement followed comments on a previous post that referenced US President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign slogan – MAGA. Earlier on Saturday, Musk remarked, “From MAGA to MEGA: Make Europe Great Again!”
Recently, Alice Weidel, co-chair of the right-wing Alternative for Germany party, echoed this slogan in a reaction to a post that drew parallels between her party's policies and those of Trump and Musk, although she later deleted her post. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban had also utilized the slogan during his country’s EU presidency last year.
In recent months, Musk has established himself as a close adviser to Trump and has been actively supporting European right-wing parties, including the AfD, which is gearing up for the German federal elections this year.
In a December op-ed for the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO referred to the AfD as the “last spark of hope” for the nation and criticized German Chancellor Olaf Scholz as an “incompetent fool.” Last week, Musk hosted a livestream discussion with Weidel on X, which led to controversy in Germany. During this session, he reiterated his position, asserting, “Only AfD can save Germany.”
Musk's actions have drawn accusations from European leaders, including Scholz, who allege that he is meddling in domestic affairs throughout the continent. Currently, the AfD is polling second at around 20%, trailing the leading Christian Democrats, who have over 30%.
Musk's political activities in Europe extend beyond Germany. In the UK, he has interacted with Nigel Farage, the leader of the right-wing Reform UK party, and is reportedly contemplating a donation of up to $100 million to support the party, which he has termed “the only way to save” the UK. Earlier this month, Musk also voiced support for the release of Tommy Robinson, a contentious British right-wing activist who was imprisoned in October for presenting a documentary that included libelous accusations against a Syrian refugee.
