SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has indicated that the potential involvement of the US government in the recent arrest of Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov in France is “concerning.” Musk had previously urged the French government to clarify its legal grievances against the Russian tech entrepreneur.
Durov, who is 39 and holds citizenship in France, the UAE, and St. Kitts and Nevis, was detained last week when he arrived at Paris-Le Bourget Airport. A Paris magistrates court formally indicted him on Wednesday, accusing him of complicity in various offenses.
Following his detention, Durov was released on a bond of €5 million ($5.55 million) and instructed to remain in France until the investigation is finalized.
In a post on X on Friday, Musk commented on Tucker Carlson’s recent discussion with internet freedom advocate Mike Benz, stating that it was a “concerning possibility” that Washington may have influenced Durov's arrest.
In his conversation with the executive director of the Foundation For Freedom Online, Carlson noted that it was “very hard for a bystander without direct knowledge, being me, to believe that [French President Emmanuel] Macron could or would have done that without the encouragement or at least agreement of the Biden administration.”
Responding to Macron's claim on X that there was no political motivation behind the actions concerning Durov, Musk wrote: “It would be helpful to the global public to understand more details about why he was arrested.”
The French court stated that Durov faced charges related to a dozen offenses, which included complicity in “administering an online platform” for a criminal gang engaged in illicit transactions—a charge that could carry a maximum sentence of ten years in prison. Additional charges include facilitating fraud, money laundering, and distributing narcotics and child pornography, as well as failing to provide user data for law enforcement inquiries.
In an April interview with Tucker Carlson, Durov asserted that he had garnered “too much attention” from the FBI and other law enforcement agencies while in the United States.
Following Durov’s arrest, several public figures, including Carlson, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, former CIA and NSA contractor Edward Snowden, and Silicon Valley investor David Sacks, voiced their support for the Telegram founder.
