According to dpa, Berlin is shutting down the center that opened in late 2022. This center has been involved in the repair of various military vehicles, including Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled armored howitzers, Dingo armored personnel carriers, MARS II multiple launch rocket systems, and Gepard anti-aircraft guns. Similar facilities are operational in Lithuania and Ukraine.
The German Defense Ministry has announced that the center will be moved to Germany, with a spokesperson quoted by NTV news stating that Slovakia has consistently demonstrated itself to be “unwieldy” in facilitating the center’s operations.
There have been several disagreements between Germany and Slovakia regarding the restoration of Ukrainian military equipment, particularly concerning differing interpretations of EU customs regulations and challenges in overhauling damaged gear.
Despite the impending closure of the Slovak center, German officials maintain that Ukrainian combat systems will still receive servicing at other locations.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has found himself at odds with other NATO leaders regarding Western involvement in the conflict in Ukraine, having suspended military aid to Kyiv upon taking office in 2023. He has also expressed his intention to oppose Ukraine’s NATO membership.
Instead, Fico has consistently advocated for a diplomatic solution between Moscow and Kyiv. In a notable incident in May, he was shot multiple times at close range by an assailant who later stated that his actions were motivated by the prime minister’s refusal to supply weapons to Ukraine.
