League Cup victory for Newcastle concludes their trophy drought, triumphing over Liverpool
Newcastle United celebrated the end of a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy, defeating the defending champions Liverpool 2-1 to claim the English League Cup. Goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak in each half led to a jubilant atmosphere at...

Local hero Burn opened the scoring with a powerful header in the 45th minute, capping off Newcastle's strong performance in the first half. The Geordie fans, donning black and white, propelled the team’s efforts, and Isak extended the lead seven minutes after the break with a well-placed shot past Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
Liverpool, who are currently leading the Premier League, managed to reduce the deficit in stoppage time with a goal from substitute Federico Chiesa. However, it was too late for Liverpool as Newcastle celebrated their first domestic trophy since 1955.
Just two years prior, Newcastle had faced disappointment in the League Cup final against Manchester United, marking their ninth consecutive loss at Wembley. This time, they were determined to create a legacy, spurred on by their passionate supporters.
In contrast, Liverpool appeared lackluster, possibly suffering from a Champions League hangover after their recent elimination by Paris Saint-Germain on penalties.
"Well, it's amazing what football can do. I think it's one of the rare sports that has that ability to give people days that they'll always remember. And with such a long wait for a trophy, this will be a day that I'm sure everyone will never forget. We will never forget it. I certainly won't. I think there's different ways to win trophies today. Today, we won it in the best way. We played a brilliant opponent who have been the best team in the Premier League all season, by a long way. And for me, we were the better team," said Howe.
"Disappointing result, disappointing performance. So, completely different than I felt after the Paris Saint-Germain game. Losing twice in a row is something I think we've done for the first time. But that probably also comes with going into the latter stages of the tournament. So, facing Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle in a final are two very good teams, both in their own styles. But very difficult teams to face because we already knew from the game against at St James' Park how difficult it is to beat them. And it was a tough week, but it was also a week where we extended our lead to 12 points from it being 10. So, it wasn't all negative. But yeah, the last two were definitely not the way we wanted it to be," reflected Liverpool manager Arne Slot.
