Israeli military strikes Gaza hospital, resulting in the death of a Hamas politburo member
On Sunday, the Israeli army conducted an airstrike on the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, resulting in the death of Ismail Barhoum, a member of Hamas' politburo, along with at least four other Palestinians, according to sources from the region and eyewitness accounts.

Local sources informed Xinhua that an Israeli drone targeted the second floor of the complex's emergency building, specifically the surgery department, using at least one missile, which ignited a significant fire.

Medics reported to Xinhua that medical personnel quickly recovered the bodies of five individuals, including Barhoum, and treated several others who were injured, some in critical condition.

Gaza-based health authorities released a statement later in the evening, saying, "The Israeli army targeted the surgery building inside the Nasser Medical Complex a short while ago, which housed many patients and wounded, and a large fire broke out there."

Hamas later confirmed Barhoum's death, indicating that he was in a hospital ward at the time of the airstrike.

On the same night, Israeli forces stated that they had launched an attack on the Nasser Hospital compound, asserting that their target was a Hamas official.

In a joint statement, the Israel Defense Forces and Shin Bet domestic security agency described the official as a "key" Hamas militant, who was "operating inside the Nasser Hospital compound" in Khan Younis, though they did not disclose the individual's name.

They further noted that "the strike was conducted following an extensive intelligence-gathering process and with precise munitions, in order to mitigate harm to the surrounding environment as much as possible."

The Nasser Medical Complex, recognized as the second-largest hospital in Gaza, has faced multiple Israeli attacks since October 7, 2023.
