Dozens of individuals have lost their lives, and many more have been injured following an Israeli airstrike on a Gaza City school that had been converted into a shelter, according to Palestinian authorities.
The assault on the Tabeen school, located in the central district of the city, occurred on Saturday morning. Both Gaza officials and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have confirmed the incident.
Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the number of casualties. Al Jazeera, referencing Gaza’s government media office, reported that the bombing resulted in over 100 deaths and numerous injuries, noting that not all bodies have been recovered yet.
The Associated Press (AP) relayed information from the Gaza Health Ministry’s ambulance and emergency service, which reported a death toll of 60 and 47 injuries. AP described the event as "one of the deadliest strikes" in the ten-month conflict between Israel and the Palestinian armed group Hamas.
Gaza’s government media office stated that the high number of casualties was due to IDF warplanes bombing the displaced people at the school while they were performing the dawn prayer.
“We hold the Israeli occupation and the American administration fully responsible for this massacre,” the statement said. The strike “comes within the framework of the crime of genocide and ethnic cleansing against our Palestinian people,” it continued.
Palestinian journalists indicated that the facility was struck by at least three bombs. Reports suggest that some individuals were trapped inside the building, which caught fire after the attack. Emergency workers have been unable to extinguish the blaze and rescue those trapped because Israel had cut off the water supply to the area.
The Israeli military claimed on X (formerly known as Twitter) that it targeted the school because it had been used as a Hamas headquarters for planning and promoting terrorist operations against IDF forces and Israeli citizens.
“Hamas systematically violates international law and operates from civilian shelters, using the population as a human shield,” the IDF stated.
UN data indicates that 477 out of 564 schools in Gaza, nearly all of which were converted into shelters for refugees during the conflict, have been directly hit or damaged as of July 6.
Israel initiated its military operation in Gaza in response to a cross-border incursion by Hamas last October, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and 250 hostages. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, more than 39,600 people have been killed and over 91,700 others wounded in Israel’s airstrikes and ground offensive in the Palestinian enclave.
