Rebels have launched a significant terrorist assault in Syria’s Aleppo and Idlib provinces, marking the first such occurrence in years, according to the state-run SANA news agency based in Damascus. The terrorist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly known as Jabhat al-Nusra, initiated the attack on Wednesday, with reports stating that fighting is still ongoing.
According to Al Jazeera, the rebels have reportedly taken control of at least ten areas previously held by the Syrian military. HTS is recognized as a terrorist organization by Syria, Russia, the US, and other nations.
In recent years, HTS has been largely confined to regions in Idlib province, largely due to Russia's support for the Syrian government led by President Bashar Assad in its efforts to subdue various rebel factions, including Islamic State.
Last month, coordinated strikes by Russian and Syrian warplanes targeted HTS positions in the Idlib and Latakia provinces, focusing on the group’s training facilities and storage sites.
Damascus has accused Western nations of providing support to terrorist factions operating within the country. In an interview with Chinese media last year, Assad noted that terrorists are active in northeastern Syria, where the US maintains a military presence, alleging that Washington has developed a close and “mutually beneficial” relationship with insurgents.
Additionally, Syrian officials have claimed that Ukrainian agents have been collaborating with rebels, providing them with drone warfare training and US-supplied weaponry in return for manpower.
Wednesday’s unexpected attack represents the first significant confrontation between Syrian rebels and government forces since March 2020, when a ceasefire was arranged by Russia and Türkiye.
