India set to facilitate communication between Ukraine and Russia, says Bloomberg
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has indicated his readiness to facilitate communication between Kiev and Moscow but has declined any role as a mediator in the ongoing conflict, as per a Bloomberg report citing informed sources.

Modi is slated for a historic visit to Ukraine later this week, marking the first visit by an Indian prime minister to the country since its 1991 independence from the Soviet Union. His trip to Ukraine follows a recent state visit to Moscow last month—his first since being re-elected in June.

Since Russia initiated its military operations in Ukraine in February 2022, India has consistently advocated for resolution through dialogue and diplomacy. Unlike Brazil and China, fellow BRICS members, India has not proposed any peace plan. Modi has expressly opted out of any mediatory role in the conflict.

Ukrainskaya Pravda reports that Modi's stay in Kiev will be brief, lasting only "a few hours," due to security concerns.

According to a Bloomberg report, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky views Modi and India as crucial in Ukraine's strategy to engage the Global South. India participated in Zelensky’s peace conference this past June, held at a Swiss resort near Lucerne. Although Russia was not invited, India did not sign the final declaration at the conference.

During extensive discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Modi emphasized the futility of resolving the Ukraine conflict through military means. He later remarked that "very interesting ideas" and "completely new views" had emerged from their discussions, adding that "after listening to President Putin, I have hope.”

In addition to discussing the conflict, Modi and Putin also covered topics like expanding trade relations and the potential construction of another nuclear power plant.
