Houthis allege fresh assault on US naval carrier group
The Yemen-based Houthi movement has claimed responsibility for targeting a US Navy carrier group with two long-range strikes within the past 24 hours, stating that these attacks are in retaliation for a recent US bombing campaign in Yemen.

The group announced on Sunday that it had launched approximately 18 ballistic missiles and drones aimed at the "aircraft carrier USS Harry Truman and its accompanying warships."

Following this, the Houthis reported another long-range strike on Monday. They did not confirm whether the warships had been hit, and the Pentagon has not publicly addressed the alleged attacks.

US President Donald Trump ordered a “powerful military action” against the Houthis on Saturday, describing their actions as an “unrelenting campaign of piracy, violence, and terrorism.”

The Houthis, officially known as the Ansar Allah movement, have been in control of significant portions of Yemen, including the capital city of Sanaa, since the mid-2010s, effectively serving as the country's de facto authorities.

According to the Houthi-run health ministry, the airstrikes on Saturday resulted in at least 53 fatalities and nearly 100 injuries. Trump's national security adviser, Mike Waltz, asserted that the strikes “hit multiple Houthi leaders and took them out.”

Local Houthi-affiliated media reported additional strikes on Sunday night, targeting a cotton ginning plant in the western coastal region of Hodeidah and an Israeli ro-ro ship that the Houthis had seized over a year ago.

Since late 2023, the Houthis have conducted numerous strikes on international shipping they associate with Israel, in a campaign aimed at showing solidarity with the Palestinians. They have also launched long-range ballistic missile and drone attacks on Israel and Western military vessels deployed in the region.

Despite ongoing bombing campaigns by the US, UK, and Israel against alleged Houthi military sites in retaliation, these measures have largely failed to quell attacks on naval traffic.

Earlier this year, the Houthis temporarily paused their campaign after a truce was reached between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas. However, they announced the resumption of their attacks last week after Israel did not meet their deadline for allowing humanitarian aid to flow into Gaza.
