Dozens of missiles launched by Hezbollah have targeted northern Israel, which the Shia group claims is retaliation for Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon that have claimed over 250 lives.
The situation between Israel and Hezbollah escalated dramatically last week, when a series of explosions involving thousands of pagers and other communication devices used by Hezbollah led to at least 37 fatalities and around 3,000 injuries, including among children. In response, Israeli jets bombed Beirut and killed Ibrahim Aqil, a high-ranking commander within Hezbollah.
“We admit that we are pained. We are humans. But as we are pained – you will also be pained,” Hezbollah’s deputy leader Naim Kassem stated at Aqil’s funeral on Sunday, declaring an “open-ended battle of reckoning” against Israel.
That same day, Hezbollah fired approximately 100 rockets at Israel, focusing on the northern city of Haifa. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) retaliated with airstrikes in southern Lebanon on Monday, which Lebanese Health Minister Firass Abiad reported resulted in at least 274 deaths, including 21 children and 39 women.
In a subsequent response, Hezbollah launched 35 rockets aimed at several Israeli military bases. The IDF indicated that these missiles targeted areas including Mt. Carmel and the Galilee.
“I promised that we would change the security balance, the balance of power in the north – that is exactly what we are doing,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Sunday during an announcement of the bombing campaign against Hezbollah from army headquarters in Tel Aviv.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani condemned the Israeli strikes on Lebanon as “insane” and cautioned about “dangerous consequences.”
“This needs to stop,” UN Human Rights Office spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani remarked to AFP on Sunday. “The attacks that we saw on the communication devices, the pagers, followed by rocket attacks and rocket fire being exchanged on both sides … marks a real escalation.”
Shamdasani further noted that UN warnings regarding the potential “regional spillover” from the Gaza conflict seem to be unfolding, as “both the actions and the rhetoric” of Israel and Hezbollah fuel the rising tensions.
Since last October, Hezbollah and Israel have engaged in exchanges of missile fire and airstrikes, resulting in the evacuation of tens of thousands in border areas. This ongoing low-intensity conflict has hindered Netanyahu’s objective to “eliminate” Hamas in Gaza, a military campaign initiated after the Palestinian group's October 7 raids, which resulted in approximately 1,200 Israeli deaths. Since that time, over 41,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have been killed during Israeli military operations.
