The Republican leader has consistently accused Joe Biden's administration of weaponizing the FBI and the Department of Justice, claiming both agencies are conducting a “witch hunt” against him. In 2022, Trump referred to them as “vicious monsters, controlled by radical-left scoundrels, lawyers and the media.”
In a confidential cable allegedly signed by Michaelis and dated January 14, Reuters reports that he predicted Trump would seek to concentrate power “at the expense of Congress and the federal states.” The document reportedly warns that “basic democratic principles and checks and balances will be largely undermined, the legislature, law enforcement and media will be robbed of their independence and misused as a political arm, Big Tech will be given co-governing power,” according to the ambassador.
The article goes on to state that Michaelis believes Trump may use the military domestically to fulfill his campaign promises, including mass deportations of illegal immigrants. He is said to have indicated that a second term for Trump could lead to a “redefinition of the First Amendment,” suggesting a potential crackdown on critics of the administration.
While the German government has refrained from hostile comments regarding Trump, Chancellor Olaf Scholz recently criticized US tech billionaire Elon Musk for aligning with what he calls the “extreme right” in Europe, including in Germany. Musk had previously called Scholz an “incompetent fool” and praised the right-wing Alternative for Germany party as capable of “saving Germany.”
In the weeks after his election victory, Trump announced that former adviser Kash Patel would be appointed as the next FBI director. Patel has criticized the agency’s operations in a recently published book, advocating for its complete overhaul.
Trump’s opponents have long accused him of endangering US democracy, while he has countered by claiming that Biden has “been weaponizing government against his political opponents like a Third World political tyrant.” He told his supporters, “Biden and his radical left allies like to pose as standing up as allies of democracy,” declaring that Biden is “the destroyer of American democracy.”
