Ambassador Andreas Michaelis has reportedly expressed concerns to Berlin that the incoming US president, Donald Trump, may attempt to undermine democratic institutions in America, according to a confidential document cited by Reuters.
The Republican leader has consistently accused Joe Biden's administration of weaponizing the FBI and the Department of Justice, claiming both agencies are conducting a “witch hunt” against him. In 2022, Trump referred to them as “vicious monsters, controlled by radical-left scoundrels, lawyers and the media.”
In a confidential cable allegedly signed by Michaelis and dated January 14, Reuters reports that he predicted Trump would seek to concentrate power “at the expense of Congress and the federal states.” The document reportedly warns that “basic democratic principles and checks and balances will be largely undermined, the legislature, law enforcement and media will be robbed of their independence and misused as a political arm, Big Tech will be given co-governing power,” according to the ambassador.
