George Santos launches 2024 reelection bid
The announcement comes as filings show that the embattled freshman Republican's campaign lost money in the first quarter of 2023.
Rep. George Santos is running for reelection in 2024, the embattled freshman announced on Monday — despite recent filings showing his congressional campaign lost money during the first quarter of 2023.
“I am proudly announcing my bid for re-election for #NY03. This is about TAKING BACK our country and restoring greatness back to New York,” the New York Republican wrote on Twitter, linking to his campaign donation website.
“Good isn’t good enough, and I’m not shy about doing what it takes to get the job done,” Santos said in a statement. “I’m proud to announce my candidacy to run for re-election and continue to serve the people of NY-3.”
Santos’ first term was off to a rocky start even before he assumed office in January, after a New York Times investigation revealed that he had fabricated much of his resume. In March, the House Ethics Committee announced it had begun an investigation into Santos for possible “unlawful activity” surrounding his 2022 bid, failure to disclose all required information on House forms, possible violation of conflict-of-interest laws and an allegation of sexual misconduct. Santos first filed paperwork to run again in 2024 shortly after the investigation was announced.
The freshman representative faces an uphill battle in his bid for reelection in a district where 78 percent of voters said in January that they wanted him to resign. Several of Santos’ Republican colleagues have also called for him to give up his seat.
