A statement from Newsom’s office outlined that the special session will concentrate on “bolstering California legal resources that protect civil rights, reproductive freedom, climate change and immigrant families.”
“The freedoms we hold dear in California are under attack – and we won’t sit idle. California has faced this challenge before, and we know how to respond. We are prepared, and we will do everything necessary to ensure Californians have the support and resources they need to thrive,” Newsom stated.
Additionally, the governor's office confirmed to the Associated Press that both Newsom and California lawmakers are poised to “Trump-proof” state laws and allocate more funding to the attorney general’s office to address any potential federal challenges.
In response, California Republicans have criticized Newsom’s actions, labeling them a “shameless political stunt.” California State Assembly Republican leader James Gallagher claimed that the only resolution the special session would provide is “Gavin Newsom’s insecurity that not enough people are paying attention to him.”
Trump, who has previously referred to Newsom as ‘New-scum’, has consistently labeled him “one of the worst governors in the country.” He often cites California’s homelessness crisis and rising crime rates as evidence of Newsom’s ineffective governance.
After Trump’s recent victory over Kamala Harris in the presidential election, New York Governor Kathy Hochul and State Attorney General Letitia James announced their intentions to organize efforts against the policies of the incoming administration.
“Our team will do whatever we have to do to identify any possible threats to these rights that we hold dear in the State of New York and protect New Yorkers,” Hochul declared, expressing a commitment to focus on LGBTQ rights, gun rights, reproductive rights, as well as immigration and environmental issues.
