Ex-Greek envoy claims the US is threatening freedom of speech
The decision by Meta to block RT underscores a broader effort by the United States and its partners to suppress independent news outlets, according to Leonidas Chrysanthopoulos, a former Greek ambassador to Armenia and Poland. In a conversation with RT, he expressed concerns that Western actions against media are reminiscent of tactics historically associated with authoritarian regimes.

“We should not be surprised in Western Europe if we actually reach the stage of closing down independent media… as was happening during the Greek dictatorship or in the Nazi Germany,” Chrysanthopoulos remarked, his experience extending to former roles at the UN General Assembly.

He highlighted that the situation with RT might signal a broader crackdown, mentioning the pressure faced by other Greek outlets, like the longstanding “148-year-old newspaper Estia.”

Chrysanthopoulos criticized Meta for implementing a ban on RT without legal proceedings or presenting evidence, accusing the company of adopting deceptive practices to support its actions against the news channel.

“Since they have taken the decision not to go to court, they can start saying any kind of lies to put down RT,” he asserted. “What they are saying is absolutely false.”

He concluded these tactics pose a global threat to free speech, emphasizing the significant role of the US in these developments.
